10 Reasons to Visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, previously known as Ceylon, is a diverse island nation located near south-east India. Home to a wide variety of ethnic groups, religions and languages, it is an extremely popular travel destination, and you can easily find a number of Sri Lanka tour packages online. If you’re not yet convinced that you need to head here for your next vacation, here are 10 reasons why you need to visit this beautiful little island.

1. To experience the wildlife
Sri Lanka is home to about 5800 wild elephants and Yala National Park, which houses the largest leopard population in the world. You can even go diving with the blue whales, or simply watch spinner dolphins frolic at Kalpitiya.

2. For Sleepy Galle
This location is a back-packers paradise. Colonial Dutch architecture, charming ice-cream parlours and jewellery stores give this locality its old-world charm. You can even catch an international cricket match here, or explore the old fort.

3. The seafood
Colombo’s Ministry of Crab was founded by a couple of former national cricketers. Feast on succulent sweet-spicy crab meat in the beautiful old building of a Dutch hospital.

4. The caves
Chock-full of Buddha effigies and stunning ancient paintings, the Danbulla Buddha caves are a sight to behold, and make for some arty exploration.

5. The train routes
Ride down from Colombo to Jaffna and enjoy the breathtaking scenic beauty of this previously closed route. The Yal Devi Express has recently been reopened to make this possible, after being shut since 1990. The Kandy-Ella route is also one to be remembered.

6. For hoppers
You simply have to try this unique coconut milk and spice infused Sri Lankan snack that doubles as a hangover cure. It’s one more reason to have that third cocktail!

7. The chai
Sip on some fresh tea before heading out to see the view at Ella Rock, and pass some lush tea plantations on your way there.

8. For the sun and surf
Catch some waves by the golden sands of Arugam Bay during the summer months, or hit the surf at Weligama during winter. And once the sun goes down, stop by one of the frequent beach parties to dance the night away.

9. For the Wewurukannala Vihara temple
A unique religious experience, visitors must walk past models of people being sawed apart or boiled alive here before reaching the huge sculpture of Buddha.

10. For the virgin rainforest
A natural heritage site, Sinharaja rainforest is Sri Lanka’s only remaining viable primary forest, and is largely unexplored. This is a great place for trekking or a swim beneath a waterfall. However, you’ll have to watch out for spiders and snakes.
